Import Translations from Localized Files

Lingobit Localizer can take translations from localized versions of the files in your project: localized EXE and DLL files, satellite assemblies, resource-only DLLs, and translated resource files. It compares each localized file with the original file and imports the translations of the items that match.

Use it to switch from another localization tool or approach (see Migrating), or to bring back translations that were made outside the project.

Import

  1. Choose Project > Import Translations from Localized Files. To import for one file, use Import from Localized File in the shortcut menu of the file in the Navigation pane.

  2. Under Languages, select the languages to import. Current, All, and None change the selection quickly.

  3. Files selected by language lists the localized files Localizer found in the places where the project would create them. If a file is somewhere else, click Browse and select it.

  4. Under Properties to import, select what to take from the localized files:

    • Text;

    • Position and size of controls in dialogs and forms;

    • Styles and other properties;

    • Binary data, such as images and icons.

    Import layout or binary data only when the localized files match the current version of the application.

  5. Select Overwrite existing translations to replace translations that are already in the project. With this option, an imported value equal to the original removes the translated value and the item uses the original again.

  6. Click OK.

Resources in Win32 and Delphi files are marked with a language. If a localized file contains several languages, Localizer asks which one to import.

Results

Imported translations get the Imported status. The Output panel shows the operation Import from Localized Files with the number of imported translations, processed files, and failed imports. Applied Changes lists the changed items grouped by property; open an item to compare the previous and imported values. To filter the items in the Navigation pane, use Filter Items in Output or the Recent Changes filter Changes from Last Localized File Import.

An item is not imported when Localizer finds no matching item in the localized file, for example because the structure of the file changed. If the original files changed since the project was last scanned, run Scan for Changes before the import.

From the command line, use -importtranslations. See Command line interface.
